What Was Life Like
In This Community?

To survive here, everyone, young and old, labored
hard in all seasons.

When two cowboys, Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason discovered Cliff Palace on a snowy
December day in 1888, it looked similar to this photograph taken in 1891.

The Pueblo builders shaped the
sandstone into building blocks
with tools made of harder river
bed stones.

Water for making mortar was
more plentifull in the springs.
